Stepping up for a cause: Our Kiltwalk heroes

Every step tells a story, and this year, three of our colleagues are lacing up their walking shoes for the Kiltwalk. This incredible challenge brings together thousands of people, all walking for causes close to their hearts.

Taking on distances from 14 to 23 miles, they’ll be pushing through sore feet and tired legs, all with one goal: making a difference. Let’s meet our Kiltwalk heroes and celebrate their journey!

Meet the team:

Gillian Adams – walking for Team Jak Foundation

As a Health and Wellbeing Assistant with Live Well Community Referral, Gillian knows the power of support. She’s walking 23 miles from Glasgow Green to Balloch on Sunday, 27 April, in honour of Team Jak. This charity supported her family during a difficult time. Team Jak provides social and emotional care for families affected by childhood cancer. They offer play therapy, outreach programs, and a community for those most in need.

“The Kiltwalk is the perfect mix of challenge and fun,” says Gillian.

“Walking sounds easy, but 23 miles is no joke! The amazing energy on the day keeps you going, and the number of people taking part makes it feel less daunting. It’s a social event as much as a physical challenge, which makes it much more enjoyable. The route takes us along the River Clyde, then onto the canal at Bowling, before finishing by the River Leven in Balloch. It’s a stunning walk but definitely a long one! Knowing I’m giving back to a charity close to my heart makes every step worth it.”

Irene Cree – walking for Perthshire Gundog Rescue

Irene, our L&C Coordinator for Wellbeing Partnerships at the Mitchell Library, is walking 14 miles as part of the Big Stroll supporting Perthshire Gundog Rescue. After adopting a rescue dog from the charity, she experienced firsthand the incredible work they do in finding loving homes for dogs in need.

“They provided fantastic advice and support when I adopted my dog,” Irene shares. “Now, I want to give back. I’m not sure my feet will thank me, but I know the dogs will!”

Megan O’Brien – walking for the Scottish Huntington’s Association

Megan, a Health and Wellbeing Advisor for Live Well, is walking 23 miles alongside her partner Jake. They are walking in honour of Jake’s brother, Robbie, who is living with Huntington’s disease, and in memory of his stepdad, Alan.

“Huntington’s is a devastating condition that affects movement, thinking, and emotions,” Megan explains. “The Scottish Huntington’s Association has been an incredible support to Jake’s family. This walk is our way of giving back and raising awareness.”

The Scottish Huntington’s Association provides crucial specialist care for individuals and families affected by Huntington’s disease. They offer expert-led clinics, financial and emotional support services, and youth programs to help young people growing up in families impacted by the condition. Additionally, they fund research efforts to find better treatments and, ultimately, a cure. Their work ensures that no one faces Huntington’s disease alone.

Megan’s training plan? “New walking trainers, a lot of determination, and a stockpile of Compeed plasters!”

The charities: Why this matters

  • Team Jak Foundation – Supporting families affected by childhood cancer with emotional and social care.
  • Perthshire Gundog Rescue – Finding forever homes for dogs in need.
  • Scottish Huntington’s Association – Providing specialist support, youth programs, and funding research for a cure for Huntington’s disease.

Each of these charities makes a life-changing difference, and our colleagues are walking to ensure they can continue their amazing work.
